This green succulent gets its name from the variegated patterns on its circular leaves, making each leaf look like the shell of a turtle. When blooming, “String of Turtles” displays tall green spikes with tiny flowers growing up each spike. It’s a slow grower, but great for those looking for an indoor plant that is safe around pets.

General Care for Peperomia prostrata "String of Turtles"

"String of Turtles" is a wonderful trailing succulent. It grows well indoors hanging in a pot near a sunny window.

Although it grows slowly, it can still stretch when not given adequate light. Be sure that there is plenty of air movement near its pot so that the soil doesn't stay too humid, as it can be prone to root rot if over-watered.

Watering

While this plant is a succulent, "String of Turtles" is considered by many to be a houseplant. Be sure to use the "soak and dry" method when watering, since it still needs times of drought and flood to be healthy.

If it's being overwatered, "String of Turtles" will begin to drop its leaves. In the winter, it tends to need less frequent watering. It does enjoy a higher humidity environment (around 50%).

Where to Plant

Peperomia prostrata is not cold-hardy, so if you live in a zone that gets colder than 30° F (-1.1° C), it's best to plant this succulent in a container that can be brought indoors.

How to Propagate Peperomia prostrata "String of Turtles"

Propagating "String of Turtles" is easy! Using sterile scissors, take a stem cutting. Allow the stem to callous over for several days, and then place in well-draining soil. Water whenever the soil has dried completely.
