If you want to make an itty bitty succulent garden of your own, you'll only need a few supplies:

  • Your tiny planter (see the following slides for inspiration)
  • Sphagnum moss or soil
  • Floral glue
  • Tweezers

Glue tends to be the most secure way to get your mini succulent to stay put, but sometimes soil and a little bit of time will do the trick too.

Bring in all the ocean vibes with sea shells filled with succulents. The webbed Sempervivum are reminiscent of pearls while the Sedums look more like creatures from under the sea. Just a little soak in water every few weeks and these beachy succulent arrangements will be content for months.

My grandparents had a walnut tree while I was growing up and I have fond memories of collecting walnuts at their house. They still get a few from their neighbors and last year my grandma gave me a few. After pulling out the nuts, I decided I should plant succulents in the shells! It took me a year to get to it, but I finally did.

These adorable little pots were purchased from an artist on Etsy. You could also make your own with polymer clay. Small Sempervivum varieties fit perfectly in these (like Sempervivum 'Hedge Hog') but you could also use leaf propagation babies as well.

Sea Urchin

Similar to the sea shells, this dried sea urchin made a great little succulent planter. Many succulents already look like they're relatives of ocean plants and animals so planting some inside makes sense. The dried sea urchin created a perfect bowl for soil to go into, making this one likely to last a bit longer than some of the mossy arrangements.

Broken Cups or Dishes

When a set of ceramic measuring cups broke during transit, I instantly knew how I could repurpose them. Here, a little bit of reindeer moss looks like grass mixed in with small succulent varieties. You could also do the same thing with broken cups, bowls or pots.

Creating Kokedamas is a popular way to plant succulents. This process involves covering the roots of your plant with clay or soil, then covering it in moss, and wrapping it with string to hold it all together. While making large versions of these is fun, you can make a small version with succulents and even hang them on your fridge with a magnet! String several of them together as a garland or hang groups of them from the ceiling.

How long will they last?

While it would be amazing for these tiny succulent arrangements to last forever, that's not the case. However, they will generally last anywhere from several weeks to several months. A lot of it depends on how much room there is for the succulents to grow roots, and how tough the succulents are you're using. You can also keep them in tiny arrangements for a while and then upgrade them to larger pots to help them live longer. Or simply enjoy them for the few weeks they survive.
