I'm loving the coloring book craze right now, but I don't have the patience to do a whole coloring page or coloring book. Don't get me wrong, I do find coloring to be somewhat relaxing, but I still get a little “stressed” about what colors to use and getting it to look just right.
Plus, it just takes so much time to get one whole page done… Can you tell I'm not always the most patient person? 🙂
So… I thought I would create my own coloring card! It's just 4×6″ so it doesn't take hours to color. Plus, as a bonus it's a great size to mail, frame, or give to a friend. Once you're done coloring you have a little piece of art that is ready to be shown to the world!
Here's the great thing for you… I'm giving you a printable copy of this cute succulent coloring card that you can try out yourself!
I used one of the most popular photos here on Succulents and Sunshine, had it converted to a black and white line drawing, and voila! A fun coloring activity for you and your friends, or your kids, or neighbors… whoever you'd like to sit down and color with!
Here are the supplies I used to print and color this card:
- A basic all-in-one printer
- 4×6″ Matte photo paper or 4×6″ Watercolor postcards
- Prismacolor colored pencil set
- Pencil sharpener
- Koi Watercolor Set
- Large paper pad or extra large (to protect your table while coloring)
There are a lot of different ways you could use this card. Plus, since it doesn't take hours to color, you can do a bunch of them and give them away or just have a variety of options for yourself 🙂
I wanted to show you a few different ways you could use this card to get your creativity going. First, is the basic coloring card option. I absolutely love the Prismacolor colored pencil set. It has a great variety of colors and the pencils are such high quality!
If you haven't tried using these before, I highly recommend them. I'm not sure I can go back to “cheap” colored pencils anymore. I also ended up using a blender pencil since I tried mixing colors. I was surprised at how big a difference it made!
Something I discovered about this set of 24 colored pencils is a few coloring cards will fit inside the case! This made it really easy to store the cards while I wasn't working on them.
If only the sharpener fit too, then it would all be in one easy to carry case!
My wonderful mother is the true artist in our family (you can see her artwork at My Flower Journal) and decided to use watercolor to paint the coloring card.
She used the Koi Watercolor Set I mentioned earlier, and it worked really well. It has a great variety of colors so you hardly have to mix paints to get stunning colors like she did here!
A note about using watercolors with this printable: If you use an inkjet printer (here's the one I used) to print the cards on watercolor paper, there is a chance the ink will bleed as you add water to the paper. If you have an laser printer though, the ink won't be affected by the water.
The brush that comes in the watercolor set really controls the water well so it doesn't get too much on the paper. We tried painting the card right after printing and the ink bled a little bit.
However, for the painting you see here, we let the page dry for a day and it didn't bleed at all!
There are a lot of different things you can do with the card once it's finished too. Since it's 4×6″ it fits in a standard frame. You can display it on your desk at work or on the walls of your home, wherever you want to show it off! It also makes a great postcard.
What better way to brighten someone's day than with a bright colorful succulent in the mail?
If you want a card that is a little more formal, you can also mount your finished coloring card to a 5×7″ folded card with photo corners (or just use double stick tape) and write a note inside. Slide it in an envelope and send it to a friend!
The 4×6″ size is really flexible. If you are a scrapbooker, you may be using Project Life sets. These will fit perfectly in the larger slots! You could also put the finished coloring card in a 4×6″ album. So many possibilities!
